Yes, it is worth watching again.

And honestly, this is why I look at the deeper meaning of the words we use - words like "marriage" and "matrimony" - and I examine the etymology of these words. I endeavor to answer the question, "What do we mean when we say 'marriage' anyway?"

And in looking this information up, and taking the time to do the research on these words, I find that 'marriage' is a generic word that simply describes a union of any two entities or parties or elements. In and of itself, the word 'marriage' has no innate religious connotations, and that is why I come to the conclusion that no religion can claim to have a monopoly on defining what 'marriage' is for all people in all times and in all places.

We speak of the 'marriage' between ABC and Disney, for example. That is a grammatically correct usage of that word. We speak of the 'marriage' of the flavors of different ingredients in a bowl of soup. Again, correct.

So this is why for me, it really is such an injustice, that the "religious right" thinks they can define what 'marriage' is and then get legislation passed that reflects and supports their definition of marriage. The very word is and always has been a secular word, and they are incorrect to try and hijack it for their own narrow purposes.

:shakes head:

Maybe someday this country will get over it. We can only hope.

Yeah, like Tracie said.

I thought this was so worthwhile that I posted it to FB so my SOuthern Baptist cousins can see it. Thanks Roseann.

Good rant. Olbermann made several excellent points about the history of "redefining marriage" to counter the argument that the opponents of gay marriage so often use to suggest that it's never been done.
